Summary
In 2021, Southern European distributor SEFM shipped a worn SPA cover sample 8,000 kilometres to Hydrorelax by Proway for custom OEM production. The team measured every parameter, prototyped using their own material system, and achieved first-attempt approval in under a month. Five years later, SEFM has never changed suppliers.

Five years ago, a Southern European distributor found Hydrorelax at the Canton Fair. Before that, he had been sourcing SPA covers locally in Europe — at a price that was becoming hard to justify. He knew we had the capability to solve his problem, so he decided to try: he shipped a worn cover sample across 8,000 kilometres for us to replicate and improve.
That one sample led to five years of partnership. Since 2021, SEFM has remained a stable OEM partner of Hydrorelax by Proway in Southern Europe.
This article documents what happened from the moment that sample landed on our workbench.

Measuring a Used Cover: How Custom SPA Cover Production Actually Starts
The first thing we did was lay the sample flat on the workbench.
It was a cover that had been pulled off a hot tub after years of use — worn, stained on the inside, but structurally intact. Our engineer spread it across the design room's large work table and went through it with a tape measure, section by section.

The construction of the centre fold seam
The side thickness, and the density distribution of the upper and lower EPS foam core panels
The routing of the vapour barrier strip, the positions of the tie-down straps, zipper tooth pitch, and stitch density
From a cover that looked ordinary, we extracted a full set of measurable parameters.

We did this because we know: a SPA cover is not just a piece of fabric. It is a system of thermal insulation, waterproof structure, load-bearing design, ease of use, and multi-year service life. Any parameter that is off — even slightly — the end user will feel it the next time they use the spa. And once a customer feels something is wrong, that means a complaint or a return.
SEFM did not provide any technical documentation. His only instruction was: match the dimensions of the sample. Everything else — materials, construction details, tolerances — was worked out between our procurement and technical team and the client through direct discussion. Once all parameters were confirmed, the specification went to the factory for prototyping.
At this stage, asking the questions the client has not answered yet matters more than anything else. Assumptions cost more than conversations.

Why We Did Not Copy the Sample: How Hydrorelax by Proway Approaches OEM SPA Cover Production
SEFM had been buying SPA covers from local European suppliers. The reason he came to us was straightforward: local sourcing was too expensive.
Most factories receiving a sample order will try to replicate it as closely as possible — same fabric, same foam, same hardware. That feels like the safest approach.
We made a different choice: we prototyped using Hydrorelax by Proway's own material system, built up over years of SPA cover manufacturing.
The logic is clear. A European-made cover reflects the cost structure of European supply chains. Copying it exactly means copying its price. That does nothing to solve the client's core problem. Prototyping with our own material system — achieving equivalent or better quality at a controlled cost — is what the client actually needed.
Hydrorelax's full custom SPA cover service now covers logo printing, 12 standard colours, multiple shapes and sizes, lock styles, and packaging options. SEFM's case was one of the early projects that shaped this system.

First Prototype, First Approval: How We Went from Sample to Order in Under a Month
Once the spec was finalised, the sample went into production. The result: approved on the first attempt.
SEFM confirmed that the dimensions, colour, and construction matched his expectations, and placed the first formal order shortly after. From the day he shipped the sample to the day we received the purchase order, the entire process took less than a month.
A first-attempt approval in custom manufacturing is not luck. It comes from reading the sample accurately, asking the right questions, and having a material system you already understand. Each of those things reduces the gap between what the client expects and what the factory produces.
Five Years On: Why SEFM Has Not Changed Suppliers
Since that first order in 2021, SEFM has not changed suppliers. Over five years, the scope of the partnership has grown from a single cover model to a stable, ongoing supply relationship.
He originally shipped a sample 8,000 kilometres because local European sourcing was unsustainable on cost. Five years later, SPA cover procurement is no longer a problem he has to think about. That is the most practical outcome of a long-term OEM partnership.
In B2B manufacturing, client retention tells you more than client acquisition. Keeping a customer for five years comes down to two things: consistent product quality, and the ability to resolve problems quickly when they arise. Five years of uninterrupted orders is the clearest evidence we can offer.
Four Key Takeaways
A sample is a complete brief. A physical cover contains more actionable information than an incomplete spec sheet. Sample-based custom production is the workflow we know best.
Replication is not the same as improvement. Copying a sample exactly reproduces its problems and its cost structure. Using our own material system lets us deliver something better at a lower price.
First-attempt approval is built on detail. Every stitch line, every strap position recorded precisely — that is what makes a single-round prototype possible.
Five years without switching suppliers is the real proof. Consistent quality and reliable service over time are what keep a client from looking elsewhere.
Looking Ahead
Five years is not a finish line. Demand for custom SPA covers across Southern Europe and the broader Mediterranean market continues to grow. Hydrorelax by Proway will continue supporting SEFM and other clients with end-to-end service from sample measurement through to volume production.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What information do you need from a client to start custom SPA cover production? −
A: A physical sample is ideal. If shipping a sample is not possible, detailed dimension drawings, material requirements, and reference photos work as well. Our procurement and technical team will confirm all specifications directly with the client before prototyping begins.
Q: How long does a custom SPA cover prototype typically take? −
A: Depending on product complexity, the prototyping cycle is generally 2 to 4 weeks. Once specifications are confirmed, we provide a clear timeline.
Q: What sizes and shapes can Hydrorelax customise for SPA covers? −
A: We support most standard shapes — square, rectangular, round, and irregular — as well as fully custom dimensions based on the client's sample or drawings. Logo printing, 12 colour options, multiple lock styles, and packaging options are all available. See the full customisation page for details.
Q: How does Hydrorelax's pricing compare to sourcing SPA covers locally in Europe? −
A: Hydrorelax by Proway's proprietary material system and scaled manufacturing deliver significantly lower costs than European local sourcing. Quality standards remain consistent — lower price does not mean lower quality.
Q: What is the minimum order quantity for custom SPA covers? −
A: MOQ varies depending on the product and customisation scope. Contact us with your specific requirements and we will provide a tailored proposal.
